In May 1968 Warhol travelled with Paul Morrissey to California to speak at further colleges. Whilst in La Joll a they started yet another film, Sur f ing Movie, although police harassment and conflicts on the set prevented its completion. Back in New York, life at the Factory continued as hectically as ever, although by now Warhol had been forced to move his working premises. But the change of workplace did little to alter the atmosphere of Warhol’s creative surroundings. Certainly the move did nothing to diminish an inherent danger that stemmed from the accessibility of the Factory to people unbalanced by drugs or psychological problems.

The artist frequented the ‘in-crowd’ discotheque, Studio 54; he cultivated contacts in the pop music world such as Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and John Lennon; he hung around the White House and hobnobbed with doomed kings and dictators, such as the Shah of Iran and President Marcos of the Phillipines; and money became more and more of a creative incentive to him as his lavish international lifestyle demanded constant refuelling – as he stated in his book The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, published in 1975: Business art is the step that comes af ter Art.

Of course, in both categories of works the repetition of the imagery carries cultural implications pertaining to mass-communications. Warhol’s increasing disillusion with fixed images by 1966 was therefore probably inevitable, given that he had used up subject-matter ‘so fast that he was feeling exhausted of imagination’. Where could he go next? Faced with this exhaustion, Warhol turned to other forms of cultural expression. In December 1965 he took over the rock music band The Velvet Underground, and in April 1966 he made this group the centrepiece of a multimedia music show entitled the Exploding Plastic Inevitable.
