But it is quite clear that K¤{akkarai Taikk¢ Ì¢Àib is meant, as Im¢m al-©Ar¦s calls him in one instance “… our leader and teacher …” (1963: 501); K¤{akkarai Taikk¢ Ì¢Àib was the teacher and spiritual guide as well as the father-in-law of Im¢m al-©Ar¦s. Further proof comes from the fact that Im¢m al-©Ar¦s quotes part of a poem by the famous poet Ku½aËku¿i Mast¢n Ì¢Àib where he identifies Ku½aËku¿i Mast¢n Ì¢Àib as a disciple of the said ©Abd al-Q¢dir. : 74). Sadly, the S_h_ar¤©a m¢lai is not contained in the collection of 20 poems from the S_h_u©abu 'd-d¤n printed in Tamil script which is available to me (cf.

While I could not find any panegyrical or biographical poems by K¤{akkarai Taikk¢ Ì¢Àib (that is, none where these topics predominate), there are a number of them by Im¢m al©Ar¦s, both in Arwi and Arabic. Among the most important of the Arabic poems is Maw¢hibu ’z-zayn f¤ man¢qibi ’l-Àasanayn on the life of Áasan and Áusayn, the grandsons of the Prophet, which has been translated by the author himself into Arwi (Shu'ayb 1993: 288 and 616). Among the Arwi panegyrics by Im¢m al-©Ar¦s, Talai f¢tiÀa is the most important.

Though he also wrote some Arabic works, most of his writings are in Arwi. Being one of the first (if not the first) known authors in Arwi, he produced a great number of works on different topics (cf. Shu'ayb 1993: 140-2 and 483; Ajmal Khan 1985: 52). Like his brothers, S¢m S _ h_ih¢b ad-D¤n was engaged in the revival of Islam and Muslim educational institutions in South India and Sri Lanka after Portuguese colonialism. 2 were part of this “mass education” campaign, as was the habit of reciting al-©Ar¦s was facilitated by the greater importance of prose works in Arabic in comparison to classical Tamil literature.
