But in June 1942 she had her first encounter with the Japanese. While she was walking around the town center with friends, Japanese soldiers forced the women to bow down and salute them.

As I interviewed these women I therefore had to navigate between two poles: a distancing objectivity that transformed them into my subjects and threatened to betray their understanding of events and an excessive familiarity and suspension of skepticism that collapsed history into recollection.
